After installing the program, all my graphic files are opened with UP. How can I restore the original associations?

Setup, registration

What are the minimum system requirements for UP?
The program runs on Windows operating systems: Win95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.
The minimum requirements are: Pentium 166 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 10 MB free hard disk space, true-color video card.
Why should I try Ultimate Paint?
Ultimate Paint is an advanced image editor. It's main advantage over other image processing applications is that it was built from the beginning with image creation and editing in mind. Its user interface and core functionality was based on the famous Amiga program Deluxe Paint. In addition to that UP was completed with more than a hundred image processing filters and special effects. This large built-in collection of filters is unique among image processing applications, and can even be browsed just like images in a folder.
A more detailed introduction can be read here.
What is the difference between the freeware and trial version?
You can download and use both versions for free. The trial release is exactly the same as the freeware one except that it shows the full range of image filters, even the ones that can only be used when the program is purchased. You may use all the functions unrestricted - just like in the freeware release -, however if you choose to use Adobe-compatible plugins or one of these advanced image filters (that are clearly distinguished from the free ones) the program warns you and you cannot save the image you applied the filter on.
Choose the freeware release if you don't ever plan to purchase Ultimate Paint, just want to use a reliable and sophisticated image editor, and download the trial release if you might be interested in registering UP later and using its full functionality after you have tested its available features.
I have no application that can 'unzip' a file. How can I install UP?
Windows XP has built-in zip file support. Nevertheless, if you're using another version of Windows it's still adviseable to have a free or shareware archiver program, since zip is the most widely used file format (after jpeg and mp3) on the net.
If you're still not convinced you can download the setup of the shareware release of UP in executable format by choosing 'EXE installer'.
I got my registration code as an e-mail attachment. Now what should I do with it?
Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to register UP:
1. If you haven't done it already, download and install UP from here.
2. You received an e-mail containing a small attached file named 'upfile.zip'. Uncompress it the same way as you did with the program itself after downloading it.
2. Now, you have a file called 'regcode.up'. Copy this small file into the folder where UP is installed (usually C:\Program Files\UP).
3. Then to check the above steps please take a look at that folder (e.g. by using Windows Explorer). If you see the files 'upaint.exe' and 'regcode.up' in the same folder, then the registration was successfully completed.
4. You can now start Ultimate Paint, and watch carefully the appearing window. If you see the text: 'Registered to:' followed by your name, then Ultimate Paint is successfully registered (you can invoke this dialog any time by selecting Help/About...).
I have the CD-ROM version. Can I upgrade to the latest release?
Certainly you can. There's a little file called 'regcode.up' in the main folder of your UP Deluxe CD-ROM which contains your registration code. See the next answer on how to upgrade.
How do I upgrade? Will my regcode work with the new version?
Your registration number is in a small file called 'regcode.up' which is in the folder where UP was installed (usually C:\Program Files\UP). Copy this file to a safe place (e.g. floppy disk, or a temporary folder on the hard disk). Then uninstall the old version. Now download and install the new version from here. After the installation copy that registration file to UP's folder to register the new version.
Your registration code is valid for all 2.xx releases.
Do you plan to release a Mac version?
In the near future we do not plan to port UP to Apple - all our resources go into the Windows development. A decent Windows emulator, however, might help you to use UP on your computer...

Brush handling

What is a brush?
A brush is what you drag around on the image when you're in freehand drawing mode. It's also the graphics you use to carry out different drawing operations such as line or circle drawing, etc.
In its default form it's a 1x1 pixel dot, however it can be anything you cut out or load.
How can I change the shape of the brush?
First invoke the Brush Shape panel by selecting Options/Brush Shape or by clicking on the top left icon of the toolbar. There are two types of brush: factory and custom shapes. If you want a larger circular or rectangular brush, simply select the desired shape on the panel and increase the brush size.
Sometimes you might want to use your own brush, in which case simply load an existing one by clicking on the Load button of the dialog (any image can be loaded as brush), or cut your brush out from the current image: use any of the brush cut icons from the toolbar.
How can I get back the original dot?
Use Brush/Reset to get back your 1x1 pixel brush shape. You may alternatively press '.'. If you have a factory-shape brush this hotkey can also be used to switch between the current size and the original 1x1 pixel brush.

Miscellaneous

Can I create animations with UP?
UP cannot handle animations. Although you can open a single frame of an AVI file or an animated GIF, you cannot work with the animation as a whole, and you cannot save it with UP.
I cannot find many of the icons I see in the help. Do I have a limited version?
No, we did not limit the available drawing functions in any way. Several icon functions have numerous subfunctions, e.g. you can use Continuous freehand, Dotted freehand and Single freehand when choosing the freehand drawing mode. If a drawing function has different subfunctions, a small black rectangle is displayed at the bottom right corner of its icon. You can switch between these subfunctions by either holding the mouse key down on the icon for a second and then choose from the popup menu, or pressing the hotkey of the function repeatedly to move the icons around.
I cannot move the image around with the 'Move selection' tool (the little hand icon). What am I doing wrong?
The 'Move selection' tool moves the selection (which you made with one of the selection tools), not the image. To move the viewable area of the image, you can use the scroll bars, the direction keys, or the scroll button of the mouse.
How can I create transparent background for my GIF image for web design purposes?
First you must select the area which you would like to make transparent with the help of the various selection tools found on the left toolbar. The easiest way to select the whole background is to use the Magic Wand selection tool. Then from the Image menu choose Alpha / Set Alpha filter and set how much the area should be transparent. For web design purposes it should be set to full transparency. Or you can use the Fill area tool to fill the background with a 255 tansparency. Transparent areas will be displayed checkered on the image. Then save it as a transparent GIF file.
How can I draw wider lines with arrow?
To use wider lines, you must change the size of the brush. Click on the 'Show brush panel' icon on the left toolbar (it is the top-left icon). Then on the appearing panel set the Size value.
To have an arrow, click on the 'Single line' icon on the left toolbar, then choose an arrow size on the appearing panel.
Using the Cut and Paste functions in the Edit menu is not very convenient. Is there an easier way to cut, copy or move a portion of an image?
UP offers a lot more convenient and flexible way to cut and paste objects than the standard Cut and Paste functions: using brushes.
First you must select the area you want to cut with one of the selection tools (these can be found under the 'Cut rectangle' icon on the left toolbar - just hold down the left mouse button on it for a while to make a group of other icons appear). When you have the selection, choose Get selection from the Brush menu. Your brush becomes the selected area. Now you can put it anywhere you like, even on a different image.
How can I mirror an image horizontally or vertically?
You can mirror an image if you write negative values into the Resize tool. So for example if you set the X Percent value to -100% (and switch off the Keep ratio option), the image will be mirrored horizontally.
How can I change the background color of a photo I just scanned in?
Basically there are two possible ways to change a picture's background in UP: 1. You may try the Change Color tool (found on the left toolbar). With this tool click on a background pixel, but make sure your drawing color is white. Adjust the Color threshold value until you get the best result.
2. You may try to outline the foreground objects with the Filled Shape or Filled Polygon tool (also found on the left toolbar) manually. Also make sure your drawing color is white when you do this. This method is a lot more work, but can grant you perfect result.
How do I save just a portion of an image?
You have to make an image that contains the selected area. So when you have the selection, choose 'Crop' from the Image menu (or just press Ctrl+P) to make a new image containing the selected area. Now you can save this image.
How do I rotate a portion of an image, especially text?
If you want to rotate a portion of the picture, first you must select that portion with one of the selection tools (on the left toolbar hold down the mouse button for a while on the 'Cut rectangle' tool to make more icons appear).
Then choose Get Selection from the Brush menu. Now you have a brush containing the selected area. You can rotate this brush by choosing Rotate from the Brush menu. (Note that when you have put a text on the picture, it is automatically selected to make it easier to manipulate it afterwards.)

Troubleshooting

I moved the toolpanel/palette/toolbar out of the screen accidentally and cannot restore it.
Simply quit the program, select Reset Ultimate Paint Layout under Start/Programs/Ultimate Paint, and restart Ultimate Paint.
After installing the program, all my graphic files are opened with UP. How can I restore the original associations?
In the Options/Preferences/Extensions dialog uncheck the file types which you don't want to associate with UP. After pressing Ok, your problem should be solved.
During installation UP does not change any of these file associations, so if you do not alter the contents of this panel no association will change.
